Creative Writing (minor)
The Creative Writing minor prepares students to engage in a diverse world of thought and culture by exposing students to the work of writers in the long tradition of literary arts and positioning these students to contribute to that tradition through their writing.
For students interested in penning their own literature, our Creative Writing minor trains students in the arts of poetry and fiction and offers opportunities to explore specialized genres such as Speculative Fiction, Experimental Forms, and Nature Writing. In our craft classes, you will learn to write across vast terrains of human thought and emotion—and perhaps encounter some non- or more-than-human beings along the way. In the Editing and Publishing course, students learn the ins and outs of submitting their writing for publication, and they hone their editorial skills by working on Ragweed, the Lees-91探花 literary journal.
After Graduation
While Creative Writing minors are well-situated to pursue careers in writing, editing, publishing, and teaching, the highly transferable skills they develop through their coursework apply across a variety of career paths. We teach future biologists how to write compelling descriptions of the wildlife they study, we strengthen future business leaders’ ability to craft the story of their brand, and we deepen future psychologists’ understanding of human diversity by challenging them to write from a variety of perspectives. For graduates with advanced skills in the art of written expression, the possibilities are truly endless.
