Italy—Cultures and Landscapes Outdoor Expedition

Join Outdoor Recreation Management in May 2025 for a cultural immersion in some of Italy’s most iconic regions. We will start by discovering and experiencing, slowly, via bike (or e-bike) on quiet country roads and paths, the territory of Parma, the capital of the so-called “Italian Food Valley” and the UNESCO creative city of Gastronomy. Then we will spend five days hiking from village to village along the Via Francigena Trail, a historic pilgrimage trail. Next, we will travel by train to Venice where we will experience some of the hidden treasures of this city. We will take a traditional Venetian rowing class, and explore some of the outer islands near the city. We conclude our trip based in the Dolomites—UNESCO World Heritage Mountain Group, at Sanpietro Hut Trientro Alpine Club. From here we will explore the area spending the first two days experiencing Via Ferrata and rock climbing. Then, we will explore some of the higher huts and embark on a two-and-a-half-day adventure traversing the ridgeline of Monte Baldo and Monte Altissimo di Nago to the east of Lake Garda.

Students must be enrolled in ORM 399 Expedition Travel: Italy. This course will meet weekly in the Spring 2025 semester.
