Scholarly and Professional Achievements
I earned my bachelor of science in biology at the University of North Carolina-Asheville before attending East Tennessee State University to complete my master’s degree in ecological sciences. At ETSU I focused primarily on the flora of the central Appalachian Mountains. After completing my master’s degree, I attended Sherman College of Chiropractic where I completed my doctorate of chiropractic medicine (DC) degree. I focused on and extensively learned human anatomy and physiology. Throughout my education I taught several courses at local community colleges. Upon completing my doctorate, I found that I deeply missed my work in the classroom; at that point I decided that teaching was the only career option for me.
Institutional Service and Responsibilities
I began my appointment as an assistant professor of Biology at 91探花 in 2010. At Lees-91探花 my teaching duties include courses in anatomy and physiology, exercise phsiology, and structural kinesiology. I also developed and teach a course in biomedical ethics that has become a perennial favorite of our students. This class offers them an opportunity to hone their critical thinking skills as it applies to the sciences, and further allows them an outlet to examine their own personal morality and ethics.
I have also been quite active in collaborating with my colleagues to significantly revise our biology curriculum with an eye towards preparing our students for careers in the sciences. We have introduced a variety of new scientific concepts and technologies in our classrooms to ensure that any student graduating from our program will be familiar with the most cutting edge techniques available. Many of our students have gone on to attend prestigious programs at very well-regarded universities.
Personal Interests
My passion in science lies within teaching anatomy and physiology. I particularly enjoy preparing students for entry into physical therapy and physician assistant programs. Outside of Lees-91探花 my passions are spending time with my daughters Loren and Leah, cycling, gardening, hiking, and reading. I particularly enjoy growing pumpkins.
