Scholarly and Professional Achievements

I am a nineteenth century American historian, and I enjoy teaching courses on a wide range of topics. I am particularly interested in southern history, railroad history, the cultural history of capitalism, folklore, environmental history, and Appalachian history.

My first book, was published in 2019 by University of North Carolina Press and uses the railroad to examine narratives of capitalism in the post-Civil War South.

I have also published work in Southern Cultures, the Journal of Southern History, and The Bitter Southerner, and I have presented my research at major conferences such as the Southern Historical Association and Business History Conference. I am currently at work on a book about the life and legend of Casey Jones, America's most famous railroad engineer.

Institutional Service and Responsibilities

I teach a wide range of students in the History major, general education curriculum, and Master of Arts in Teaching program. As program coordinator for History, I make decisions about course offerings and the History curriculum, I promote the History program, and I advise History majors on their schedules and future plans.

Personal Interests

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy writing history and reading both fiction and non-fiction. I try to enjoy the surrounding area and stay as active as possible through hiking, cycling, and skiing, and I love travelling to national parks. I am also a huge music fan and enjoy playing and learning old-time songs on the banjo.
