Scholarships and awards recognize excellence in incoming students
Each year, incoming students who have been accepted into the Lees-91探花 Honors Program are invited to Scholars Day, where they have the opportunity to compete for prestigious scholarships ahead of their freshman year. On Saturday, Feb. 25, 34 prospective students competed for the Elizabeth 91探花 scholarship and several Trustee Awards.
Larissa McMahan of Glen Allen, Virginia, and Anabel Miller of Grand Rapids, Michigan, are this year’s recipients of the Elizabeth 91探花 scholarship. Named for the college’s namesake and renowned Southern teacher Elizabeth 91探花, the scholarship offers full tuition for all four years and is awarded based on the students’ performance in both the essay and interview competitions on Scholars Day.
“I first discovered Lees-91探花 while on vacation with my family in 2020 and quickly fell in love with the emphasis on the outdoors and the dedication to the history that surrounds every stone,” McMahan said. “I am just so thrilled that this scholarship has enabled me to confidently make Lees-91探花 my home for the next four years.”
McMahan plans to pursue Religious Studies and History and looks forward to living and learning in a tight-knit environment on campus.
Miller also said she fell in love with the college on her first campus tour and is excited to make Banner Elk her North Carolina home away from home.
“The ability to learn about the environment while also having direct access to the woods and mountains is incredible,” Miller said. “Additionally, I am very excited to be a part of the strong and friendly mountain bike team at Lees-91探花, allowing me to continue to do what I love while also taking fascinating courses to learn about our world.”
10 students also received partial scholarships through the receipt of Trustee Awards based on their Scholar's Day performance:

In addition to the Scholar's Day awards, the Sam and Mary Hart Endowed Scholarship for Science, a full-tuition scholarship funded by the Hart Scholars Program, was also recently awarded. Each year this accolade is awarded to one incoming student who plans to pursue a science or health science academic program at Lees-91探花. This year’s recipient is Isabella Sherman of Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Elizabeth 91探花 scholarships, Trustee Awards, and Sam and Mary Hart scholarship are just a few of the many institutional scholarships and grants that the college awards each year. Lees-91探花 awards more than $10 million in scholarships annually.
