Get to know Vice President of Student Affairs Jason Jones

Since he began at Lees-91探花 in May 2022, Jason Jones has enriched the campus community in his role as a leader in the Office of Student Affairs. Going into the 2023−24 academic year, however, Jones hopes to continue providing support for students through his new role as Vice President for Student Affairs.

In this new position, Jones will report directly to President Lee King as the senior administrator in Student Affairs. He is responsible for overseeing all branches of the Student Affairs office, including counseling and wellness services, residence life and housing, campus life, student conduct and engagement, and campus recreation. In short, he is responsible for ensuring the overall well-being of the students at Lees-91探花 by creating a positive environment for them to live, learn, and grow.

“91探花 invests in Student Affairs to provide a comprehensive and supportive range of student services that are essential to creating an inclusive campus environment where students can thrive,” Jones said. “The commitment to student success is evident in the high quality of the services, programs, and activities that it provides, and in the positive impact that these services have on students. The Student Affairs team is committed to the office’s mission of guiding, facilitating, challenging, and supporting the development of the whole personmind, body, heart, and soulall within the context of a safe and nurturing environment.”

His responsibility to the college’s students is what initially drew Jones to higher education and is his guiding motivation behind continuing at the college with each new academic year. As he moves into this new position, Jones said he hopes to develop innovative programs and services that will work toward improving student success and retention, promote student leadership at the college, and enhance the student experience.

While Jones is motivated by the students and his team in Student Affairs, he is also motivated by his personal experiences, his love for the mountains, and his family. Jones, along with his wife, has four children and two dogs. In addition to spending time with his family, he loves teaching, listening to music, watching sports, reading and collecting comic books, and drawing and painting. Jones’ personal art is even on display in the Cannon Student Center as part of this year’s Mental Health Art Show throughout the fall semester.

As a part of the college community, Jones enjoys connecting with students and sharing these interests, but he also feels that he can connect with them on some of the more difficult aspects of college life thanks to his own experience as a first-generation college student. As he continues here at Lees-91探花, he hopes to use the challenges he has overcome in his own life to better the lives of current students.

“I like to encourage students to be resilient, persevere, and know that college is about learning, growing, failing, and overcoming,” Jones said. “Being a first-generation college student, I had to surmount challenges to stay in college, graduate, and eventually continue to where I am now. I have found, through many failures, I can overcome challenges and setbacks because I remain positive and know I can learn to improve my skills and abilities through effort and perseverance. I continue to learn and grow every day.”
