Stephenson Center for Appalachia event honoring Doc Watson nominated for International Bluegrass Music Association award

The 2021 John B. Stephenson Center for Appalachia event “Doc Watson: Celebrating a Life in Music” has been for Event of the Year at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) 2022 Bluegrass Music Awards. The event, held on Lees-91探花 campus in November 2021, honored the life and work of influential Appalachian musician Doc Watson.

The Event of the Year category is part of the Bluegrass Music Awards’ Industry Awards section. According to the IBMA website, the Industry Awards are all about “recognizing outstanding work in non-performing industry categories,” such as broadcasting, songwriting, and graphic design.

Committees comprised of bluegrass music professionals appoint nominees for these categories each year, and winners are chosen by veteran bluegrass music professionals who are selected by the IBMA Board of Directors to sit on their Panel of Electors.

As a nominee for Event of the Year, “Doc Watson: Celebrating a Life in Music” is being recognized for “outstanding accomplishment and service to bluegrass music in the field of event production,” continuing Watson’s tradition of influence on the world and history of bluegrass music.

This year will mark the 33rd annual Bluegrass Music Awards. The event celebrating all things bluegrass will be held on Thursday, Sept. 29 at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, North Carolina. Tickets are available for purchase .

With values of honoring tradition and encouraging innovation, IBMA shares the same goals the Stephenson Center team did when they organized the event to honor and celebrate the local bluegrass legend.
