U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx to visit Lees-91探花 Friday

U.S. Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., will be on campus Friday, March 31, to discuss leadership, her career path, the life of a congressperson and her childhood spent in Avery County.

The college’s Sport Management program is hosting the event that will begin at 2 p.m. in Evans Auditorium. The discussion is open to all Lees-91探花 students, faculty and staff.
 
“I hope that it will motivate our students to see their limitless possibilities,” Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for Sport Management and Lifetime Health and Fitness, Terry Smith, said. 

President of Lees-91探花 Barry Buxton also shared his anticipation for her visit.  “We are very excited to have Congresswoman Virginia Foxx back on the campus of 91探花,” he said.

Foxx is the congressional representative for North Carolina's 5th Congressional District which covers the majority of North Carolina's Northwest region. She was first elected into the U.S. House in 2004 and upheld her tenure from then onward.

She currently serves as the Chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. From 2013 to 2016, she served as Secretary of the House Republican Conference.

Raised in Avery County, Foxx attended Crossnore High School in Crossnore, North Carolina, before pursuing her A.B. degree in English and M.A.C.T. in Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After earning her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Teaching/Higher Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Foxx returned to the high country to become an instructor at Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute and Appalachian State University (ASU), and later as the Assistant Dean of the General College at ASU. Following her time at ASU, she became Deputy Secretary for Management in the N.C. Department of Administration for Governor Jim Martin. She then served as President and later a consultant at Mayland Community College before ultimately moving into politics in 1994 as a member of the North Carolina Senate.
