Meet the newly renamed Theatre Arts Department and Theatre Arts Program

September 05, 2017

Formerly named the Performing Arts Program, the Theatre Arts Department and the Theatre Arts Program, housed within the department, began the new semester with newly renamed titles to match several years of tailored curriculum.

“We focus on the theatre and musical theatre areas of performing arts,” Assistant Dean of Arts, Humanities and Education and Director of Theatre Arts, Danielle Curtis, said. “We wanted a name that would really center on what we as a department and program pay our main attention to.”

Over the years, faculty have worked to hone and strengthen the department’s offerings.

“Our faculty have done a great job in creating a theatre program that follows the ever-changing challenges and developments of theatrical works,” Curtis said.

The start of the semester also brought with it many physical improvements to the Theatre Arts Department.

Over the summer, the second of a three-phase project was completed to Hayes Auditorium. Renovations included a new seating, paint, carpet and acoustic insulation.

The Lauritsen Building, once the hub for many Theatre Arts Department faculty, has now been transformed into the new Exchange Bookstore featuring Einstein Bros. Bagels and improved textbook rental program kiosks.

The former bookstore, located above the Theatre Arts Department’s dance studio and many faculty offices, will be the new home for several more offices and class spaces–centralizing the department into one building.
