If you are interested in learning about the complexities of Reconstruction in Southern Appalachia, come to the Stephenson Center for Appalachia’s lecture on November 16, at 7 p.m. in Evans Auditorium. Dr. Steven Nash will present a program based on his recently released book Reconstruction’s Ragged Edge: The Politics of Postwar Life in the Southern Mountains.  

Nash, associate professor of history at East Tennessee State University, received his Master’s degree from Western Carolina University and his doctorate from the University of Georgia. His academic interests range from the history of Appalachia and the Civil War and Reconstruction to Environmental studies and 19^th Century American History. His study of Reconstruction in the mountains of Western North Carolina Appalachia, published by the University of North Carolina Press, through research and insight presents an illuminating view of the struggles that continued after the war in an area divided in loyalty and class.

“Our area both during and after the Civil War is unique in its divided allegiances. We look forward to Dr. Nash’s program to illuminate the struggles and political differences that continue to influence life in our mountains,” said Dr. Michael Joslin, director of the Stephenson Center for Appalachia. “We invite everyone interested in this fascinating topic to join us Wednesday evening.”
