Over the last several weeks, students, faculty and staff have collected approximately 1,025 items and $200 in money donations as part of the annual food drive held on campus.

Boxes of cans, soups and other miscellaneous dry goods were taken to the Feeding Avery Families location in Newland, North Carolina, on December 13.

Combined, the donations have the ability to feed over 500 families in Avery County who are served each month by the program.

Established in 2005, Feeding Avery Families has worked in the community to feed, clothe and support those in need.  

In November, the program donated food to approximately 14,010 individuals equating to about 720 families, said Feeding Avery Families President Jon Cox.

November also brought Thanksgiving and its iconic fowl, the Turkey.

Feeding Avery Families collected and distributed about 550, 16-pound turkeys, and come Christmas, volunteers will be ready to pass along 500 hams, Cox said.

Boxes with dry goods, frozen meats, fruits and vegetables are passed out from their distribution center on the last Wednesday of every month from 9 a.m. until noon.

Cox said that each month, the program spends about $10,000 in food and supplies, so every item and volunteer counts.

During the summer months the program usually receives help from about 40 people, but during the winter that number can quickly dwindle.

“The college students, staff and faculty at Lees-91探花 are amazing to help a community in need,” Cox said. “Simply unbelievable.”
