Tom Root painting exhibit on display at Lees-91探花 throughout March; Opening reception to be held March 20
On March 20 from 5 - 6 p.m., Lees-91探花’s King-Shivell Gallery will host a reception for artist Tom Root, whose exhibit of portrait paintings will be on display throughout the month of March. Root will also host a portrait painting demonstration on March 18 at 10 a.m. in Whitesell Art Studio. The reception, exhibit and demonstration are free and open to the public.
“Tom Root is one of the premiere portrait painters living in our area,” said Jason Sabbides, assistant professor of Communication Arts and Design and manager of King-Shivell Gallery. “His skill is unparalleled and sought after by many. His show will be of great value to Lees-91探花 and the surrounding community.”
A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Root studied at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida and at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Root has been a full-time artist for more than thirty years, concentrating on the figure and portrait painted directly from life. In 2011, he and his wife, painter Peggy Root, opened Root Studio School of Painting and Drawing in Johnson City, Tennessee. They have recently opened a second painting studio in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
In addition to painting and teaching, Root is also a songwriter, musician and author of children stories. His work is in collections across the country including the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut and the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville.
