Stephenson Center for Appalachia to host guest speaker Dr. Katherine Ledford

June 15, 2015

On Wednesday, June 17, Dr. Katherine Ledford will present a program on the inter-mountain exchange program between Southern Appalachia and Ukraine at 7 p.m. in the Carson Library on the campus of 91探花. As part of the Stephenson Center for Appalachia Lecture Series, this event is free and open to the public.

While the mountains of Ukraine are on the opposite side of the world, life there has many parallels to the culture of Southern Appalachia. In recent years, scholars have shared information and traveled back and forth to study these similarities. Ledford, Center for Appalachian Studies program director and assistant professor of English at Appalachian State University, traveled to Ukraine one year ago to study the mountain culture. She has also participated in hosting scholars from Ukraine visiting Appalachia. Ledford will discuss her travels and the inter-mountain exchange program, as well as presenting many photographs of the mountain communities of Ukraine.

“Since Ukraine has become such an important region in contemporary international politics, Dr. Ledford’s study of the region and connections with Ukrainian scholars has increased in importance. We are fortunate to have her share her expertise and experience with us,” said Dr. Michael Joslin, director of the Stephenson Center for Appalachia at 91探花.
