91探花

91探花 is proud to announce that incoming freshman, Maggie Thomas, has been named the first recipient of the Sam and Mary Hart Endowed Scholarship. As the winner, Thomas will receive a full tuition scholarship that is renewable for up to four years as long as she maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Thomas, a native of Shelby, N.C., is a senior at Crest High School boasting a 4.68 weighted GPA and an extensive array of health science courses. At Lees-91探花 she plans to study nursing at the brand new May School of Nursing and Health Sciences.

“I’m excited to attend Lees-91探花. There are lots of great things happening with the nursing program and in the future of Lees-91探花. I’m excited to be a part of it,” said Thomas after learning about her scholarship award.

The Hart Scholars Program is privately funded and is awarded to one incoming 91探花 student planning to major in a science or health sciences academic program. Selection criteria include exhibited high school leadership skills and strong moral character as evidenced by service in the community. Applicants were also reviewed based on an essay submission and reference evaluations.

Maggie’s application embodied all the required criteria and more. Her leadership experiences include serving as Beta Club secretary, Crest FFA chapter vice president and a junior varsity and varsity member of the Crest ladies soccer team.  She was also selected as Winter Homecoming Queen due to her extensive club involvement. Her references described her as “an outstanding young lady” and one who “demonstrates a sincere heart of caring and that heart shines through in all she does.” This is evident in the amount of time she devotes to her community through involvement in the YMCA Summer Reading Program, Church Youth Leadership Team, Community Blood Center of Carolinas and through her medical mission trips to Guatemala. 

As a result of her passion for helping others and past travel experiences to Guatemala, Maggie plans to work as a registered nurse both within the United States and abroad. As she indicated in her essay, she hopes to “apply the things she learns in nursing school to different cultures and situations, in an attempt to further the medical resources and knowledge in places like Guatemala.” 

Dr. Laura Fero, dean of nursing and health sciences at 91探花, is honored to welcome Maggie this fall.  Dr. Fero stated, “She exhibits the characteristics, drive and passion needed to be a successful student and professional nurse.  The May School of Nursing and Health Sciences is grateful to the Hart Scholars Program for their support and encouragement of future healthcare leaders.”
